Before I start this post, I want to ask my readers and supporters some questions. What does occupation mean? Well, I checked dictionnary.com on my phone and I found it means: The term of control of a territory by foreign military forces. So what about the UN (United Nations) forces in Haiti? Is it an occupation or not? I know the UN do not call it occupation because they always say they are helping Haiti to get out out poverty. Huh poverty! Lets see what has happened with this help!

The United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) replaced the Multinational Interim Force led by the U.S. after a rebellion overthrown President Jean Bertrand Aristide in 2004. Haiti is an independent country and the constitution does not authorize and recognize any foreign military force on the national soil. Therefore, MINUSTHA is a violation of the Haitian constitution. They have been in the country for about eight years now. There are over thirty countries that have troops in MINUSTAH. According to un.org,the budget for the troops was $793,517,100 (1 July 2011 - 30 June 2012). It’s almost a billion dollars, so this is a lot of money. What is the real goal of MINUSTAH? This is a big question because they cannot not stay forever. They say that they came to help Haiti, but they have been accused for bringing cholera into the country, committing sexual violence on both women and men and also shooting Haitians during riots. Is this the goal of MINUSTAH?

 A few months after the quake, a cholera outbreak began in Haiti and it has killed over 7000 people.The Nepalese force keepers have been accused as the main folks who dumped waste into a river and contaminated it, but the UN still deny the accusation and don’t take any responsibility for it.
In terms of culture, the UN troops do not know the Haitian culture. In fact, occupy a country which is not yours always does not  seem to work because it’s a different culture with a different mindset. Peace does not always come with machine guns and tanks. I believe it takes help that could develop a nation with its own ideology.

This budget could have been used to build hospitals, roads; schools, provide clean water and power electricity etc… But the goal of the international community is keeping Haiti under their influence, begging for money all the time and putting division between the Haitian politicians and regular citizens. They want the troops to be there so that their affiliated companies can make money. Does this help? What does it take to stabilize Haiti? I don’t think machine guns count. It takes good economic development and reform of the justice system etc... When will Haiti have a break from this international hegemony? I think the idea would be helping Haiti through its difficulties and not making decision for it. The result of this occupation is fatal and the money that they are giving Haiti is basically returned back to the U.N. I say this because, the money is being used to paying for the troops and covering their expenses.

The presence of MINUSTAH in Haiti causes too much bad outcomes. The country does not need machine guns and military force. However, it does not  help and I would call it imperialism which does not do any good for the Haitians.It's about time for this caribbean nation to have its sovereignty back. Haiti needs some breath!

Heartbreak

May God bless and protect Haiti

It's very sad to write about a hurricane threatens to hit Haiti severely.I am praying for all the people in Haiti including my family and friends. The condition of Haiti is vulnerable. No infrastructure. It's a country trying to survive. Haiti has been through so much: four hurricanes in a row hit the country in 2008 and many people died,an earthquake in 2010, about 300.000 people were killed and left more than 1 million homeless and a cholera outbreak that has killed more than 7000 people. Today, there are more than 400.000 people living in camps in bad condition while hurricane Isaac is getting close to the country.I wonder why all of these are happening, but only God has the answer.I am optimist that God has a plan for my island.I am keeping the government in my prayers and hope God will give them knowledge to handle this situation. Loving Haiti Will Never Be Faded Away

Haiti is a beautiful country and the Haitian people are wonderful. Life in Haiti is difficult,but the Haitian people are very strong. They are waiting on change by holding onto their faith and hope every single day. I cannot describe how strong the people of my country are, despite poverty,earthquake and cholera they are moving on.

I have been living in the U.S. for almost two years,but my heart is still in Haiti. I check the news about my beloved country almost every day. I talk with my family and friends on the Internet via facebook and skype. I still remember the past journeys and I remember the hard life as well.

As I love the medical field, I am going to school to be a nurse. I want to do it for my country as well because I want to go back and help those who need medical care. It takes a lot to tell when it comes to talk about medical care in Haiti. The country’s medical system is obsolete, there are not enough care providers and medical facilities. Most of the hospitals and clinics are in Port-au-Prince. Sometimes, it takes two days for many people to get to a hospital or clinic, then there comes an issue; no doctors,nurses and even medicines. As a result, people die in these circumstances. Life is so important and beautiful, why is it so many people do not have the chance to survive when they are in need of medical care?

I was diagnosed with a heart problem eleven years ago.But thanks to God and Dr John Carroll who took me to the U.S. for care. I wonder how my life would be if I did not meet Dr John.I think I would have died because I did not find medical care that I needed in Haiti. Every time I think about that, I realize there are so many people in Haiti who are in the same situation like I was a few years ago. There are people who need assistance,but they suffer and die because they cannot find any help.

I carry the tears of my people in my heart like I carry mine. I love my country and I can’t stop thinking about it. Haiti is where my heart belongs. I look forward to going back and continue to be involved. May God bless my beautiful island!

We Are Paying The Price

Does Haiti have food to feed the country? is one the most frequent questions that i have been asked for the last eighteen months. People asked me this question because they had heard the Haitian children are starving to death. Food has become a major problem throughout Haiti. The national production has decreased seriously because of so many issues: infrastructure,foreign food importation and displacing farmers from the country sides to the capital,Port-au-Prince.

I have seen an enormous raise in the food prices over the last twelve years. I remember when i was younger, my mother used to complain about the prices of rice,corn;beans,wheat and sugar. But Haitians are very strong people;therefore, they cope with any situation that comes through. As the national food production goes down,foreign food invades the Haitian food market tremendously. For instance, it is cheaper to buy rice from overseas than the Haitian rice. But the majority of the population still cannot afford to buy food because they live with less than $2 US a day.

The country spends millions of dollars buying food from overseas especially from the Dominican Republic and the United States. The U.S. has been subsidizing the American rice farmers to keep the price of rice low so they can import rice into Haiti whereas they do not assist the Haitian farmers. Is this a good policy? I don't think the U.S. is helping Haiti to boost its economy and increase the food production in Haiti. As a Haitian, i have never had chance to eat the Haitian rice as much as i used to eat the American rice because my mother could not afford our country’s rice. I think it would be better if the U.S. helps Haiti overcome this situation by helping the Haitian farmers. There is plenty of rice and beans in Haiti,but most of them are from overseas especial the U.S. However,Haiti is a country with foreign food,but a population with no money.

The question is, does the U.S. have a plan to help end this problem in Haiti? About three decades ago, Haiti used to produce enough food to feed its population. But now the Haitian bellies rely on tons of food that’s coming from overseas. We are paying the price of a policy that has been in place for years. It’s time for change to come before it gets worse. Haiti cannot continue to pay such a price. Nou grangou=we are hungry!

Haiti will rise again

Since i left Haiti, nothing has changed so far. Over 4000 people have been killed by the Cholera epidemic. Haiti still the poorest country in the western hemisphere with 70 % of unemployment, thousands of Haitians are living in tent cities. The percentage of illiteracy in Haiti is very high, more than 65% of the population can't read and write and 90% of schools in the capital had been collapsed by the quake. Children are dying with malnutrition. The medical facilities are very scarce and the Haitians don't have clean water.

A new president was elected two months ago, his name is Michelle Joseph Martelly. A former musician of the famous Haitian musical rhythm called compas. Martelly became very popular on the political scene; the people believe he will change the situation of the country during his 5 year presidential term. During his campaign, he promised the country free education, medical care,job opportunities and homes.As of now, the president does not have a prime minister to run the country with. Martelly has been traveling to many countries since he got elected, he's devoted to getting the attention of the international community. He met the secretary of state Mrs Hilary Clinton, the king of Spain etc...
The presence of U.S. is so strong, the American government is still the biggest partner of Haiti, but I’m wondering why the U.S. government does not have a better plan for my country. People can see Mr Bill Clinton (U.N envoy to Haiti) as a big factor in the reconstruction of Haiti. The United Nations (UN) pledged to give Haiti $10 billion for reconstruction. I am wondering if Haiti will be given this money.
You may heard that over the last few months, two former Haitian presidents who had been in exile returned to Haiti. Jean Claude Duvalier alias Baby Doc and Jean Bertrand Aristide who are still popular across the country. Even if baby Doc had ran the country under a dictatorship, many people still love him and believe the living condition was better during the Duvalier regime. I have read an article about Aristide return, he said that he went back to Haiti in order to get involved in the education field and has no interest in politic. We know that Aristide has an immense popularity throughout the country especially in the slums; however, we will see his will toward this Caribbean nation. Politics is the main force that leads Haiti, it’s like everything is headed by that so called politics.
As I know my country fairly well, I am still advocated to playing my role as much as I can. If ever I get into politics tomorrow, I will not play that game “loving my people during campaign and turn my back to them in the office”. I hope President Martelly brings change that he promised. I hope he’s different from Preval who’s considered as one the most corrupted Haitian president within the last 20 years. Sometimes people used to call him ‘’The Dead President” because no matter what have happened to Haiti, Preval remained silent. He was like someone who could not face any situation to show the Haitians that he was for change. After the quake, Preval took many days to talk to the population, but it was still a crazy speech and he also called the U.N. and U.S. to stop the aid.

I am so glad to see how Martelly is close to the population. I hope he treats the Haitians with dignity and put good governance and economic system that could take the country onto development path. There is a lot to do Mr President, but it’s your turn because people voted for you!

Days Away

I have not posted anything on my blog for awhile.I have been receiving a lot of phone calls and emails. People really want to know how the project goes, they also want to hear news about Haiti.

I left the country last year on November 22, I am now attending college in the States by the generosity of Dr James and Jane Ebel. They are the ones who hosted me when I came to America for surgery in 2005. They did not forget me while I was in Haiti over the last 5 years. They provided me money for food and education. The Ebels believe that if they help me to obtain an education, I will be able to help my family and my country as well. I had tried twice to get a student visa, but unfortunately I was denied. I did not give up because I believe I would overcome anything that could have been an obstacle for me.

I decided to apply for a nursing degree at Black Hawk college (BHC) after being called by Rita Ledbetter (current host family) to help my friend Moise Eldor with his BHC’s application. Finally, I have been granted an F1 visa to come to U.S. for my education and I am so grateful for this opportunity. I have already completed a semester in the English as Second Language program and I am going to take a second semester which will be also my last semester in that program, then I will be taking nursing classes in spring 2012. It’s hard to leave family and friends behind, but I have to do it because they count on me. Despite I am now living in the U.S., but the project is not stopped. My older Jones brother keeps up the work.

Like I said, it’s hard to leave people you know behind. It's hard for me to leave the children in my neighborhood that I am struggling for to have education, clean water, food and medical care; but they count on me every single day. I have been through poverty and I know what it means. I miss Haiti a lot and I will eventually return to help my beloved country.

Community Development

It's been almost 7 months after the terrible quake that hit Haiti.The international community and the Haitian government have been saying that they are working to help Haiti rise again. The International community is an important actor in this issue because it is the one that promised to give the money. I am wondering about the kind of economic and development system this poor nation needs because there is any good sign until now.

Do we need a system to rebuild republic of Port-au-Prince?

Do we need a Port-au-Prince with bunches of tent cities?

Do we need a system that excludes the people from the slums?

Do we need a system that excludes the youth?

Do we need a system that keeps a group of Haitians as modern slaves by receiving $ 5 US dollars a day as minimum wage?

Do we need a system that does not going to protect the people in Bainet (Southeast Haiti) who are exposed to flood that might be causing by the ocean?

Do we need a system that does not offer any possibility to help the farmers, by killing our agriculture?

Do we need a system that does not help every Haitian to be creative?

Do we need a system that does not going to build any school?

Haiti needs another system.This a new a depart for the Caribbean nation but we are starting badly. It seems we are rebuilding republic of Port-au-Prince instead of rebuilding the whole nation by developing every part of it.Haiti needs its people to be creative for the advancement of a new nation.We need millions but how do we organize the millions? The development of this country cannot be made with this rate of illiterate people. Neglecting the aspect of education in this country is a big threat for the future.

Haiti needs a system that organizes the people from the bottom to the top. Offering the youth opportunity to be creative. Helping everyone to have a voice.

We must go over another plan, deny the unsuccessful and crazy political game. Haiti does not need any imperialism system, however, It has been driving the country poorly, but there was no realization to come up with a better life for today and tomorrow. Are we going to make the same mistake?

The country does not need people who are coming and put their own will.The country does not need any come and go experts. The millions does not need to be used to accommodate people and buy fancy cars. Haiti needs a creative environment.

Almost six months

This is a lady from Artibonite.Her name is Magalene Beaubrun .Her daughter has a heart problem and needs operation.Haitian Hearts mission founded by Dr John Carroll in Peoria, Illinois is organizing a trip for Magalene's daughter to go to the U.S. for surgery.On my side, i have been doing my best to get passport for both Magalene and her daughter to enter to America.

She lives in a neighborhood called La Chapelle, Artibonite.She was explaining me the situation over there.Artibonite (Haitian Creole: Latibonit) is one of the ten departments of Haiti. The area is 4984 km ² and the population is more than 1,202,800 inhabitants.Artibonite is the main area of cultivation of rice for the country.

It's sad to understand the situation of the famine, whereas Artibonite is the main area of cultivation of rice for Haiti.One of the man problems that cause famine is the lack of resources that the farmers have.Nowadays, Haiti does not provide enough food from the land for the population.Millions of dollars spend every year to buy food from other countries, and the people can't afford to buy it every day.

We had a significant conversation about her area.Artibonite was also hit by the January 12 earthquake which killed more than 200000 people.
The people don't have enough to eat, most of the houses were damaged and destroyed.Magalene said no aid has not reach them yet but we know that a lot of money was given for this country and it's been almost 6 months since the country hit by a big earthquake.The people use sheets to make their small place to sleep.Magalene and her family do not have a good house to stay.Her father is suffering with prostate and very ill now.I gave Magalene that tent above to sleep with her family.She has six children but the tent has a capacity to hold four people.I am sorry and sad to know that the tent will not be able to fit all of her family.

My heart is touched to go there and visit.I'd like to learn about the farmers and the gardens.
Haiti is sick from head to toes.The Haitians families are suffering every where over the land.Your help is needed, and you are blessed to contribute in the development projects of this poor nation.

When we think about the situation of Haiti. We must say things are very bad down here.
I have been thinking a lot about the vulnerability of things in this country. Misery hits the people each day.

The school project has been going on, it's in construction. Many people in the neighborhood really appreciate it. Now more than 100 hundred kids back to school and they receive one meal a day.
Education is the heart of the development of any society. We can’t develop without education thus we won't have any good corporation among the people when it is absent.
I talked with the kids, they said they were loosing hope because they did not think that they would back to school.
It is dedicated to helping the children for a better society because it can't be created without knowing how to read and write.
The school works in two sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The kids are taught different subjects based on the primary education of the government of education program. We have nine teachers and they work on a monthly contract. It goes from kindergarten to 6th fundamental grade, however, it is a primary school. A lot of kids are already registered for the next academic year. My dream is to see those kids receiving a free education because their parents cannot afford to pay.

It is impossible to ask the families to pay school for their children but in the meanwhile they are sleeping under tarps and having no job. Those children should not be sent to the street to beg people, they are the future of Haiti and the world.

I remember during some years past, my mother could not afford to pay school for me. I used to stay home educating myself, but when I back here from the U.S for my heart surgery, God talked to my host family so that they paid the rest of the years of my secondary education.

I am wondering about how would I be if I did not have anybody to help me with my education by sending me to school? How would I be if I did not attend school? Maybe I would not stand for my people today; maybe I would be something else and someone else.

Education makes me another person. If I did not attend school I would not be able to start this project to relief the situation of the people, especially the children of my neighborhood.
